7 November 1723 is the official date of the birth of Yekaterinburg. The town owes its origin to a metallurgical and metal-working. Later a mint and a lapidary factory were added to it to form one bigenterprise. The plant and the town were built by an army of two thousand serfs recruited in the neighboring villages and 960 soldiers from the tobolsk regiment. The builders worked in extremely hardconditions suffering from back-breaking labor and inhuman exploitation. The first shops, water-operated machines, dwellings and public buildings were made of wood. By the way frames filled with claythat were used in constructing the dam of the city pond are well preserved to this day. The town's first stone building was erected in 1739 to house the offices of the management board of Siberian andgovernment-controlled plants. By the end of the 18 century the population of Yekaterinburg numbered 9000. Nowadays Yekaterinburg is a city with thepopulation of a million and a half and it is a powerful industrial and research centre. Yekaterinburg is one of the major business centres in Russia. The daily life of the city is provided for by itssocial infrastructure. Its numerous shop, public catering facilities, trams, trolley-buses, buses and metro render services to its residents and visitors. The city has dozens of public libraries,cinemas, concert halls, children’s music and art schools. The opera house, the drama theatre, the philharmonic society and the circus are well-known in the country. The museums of Yekaterinburg are famousfor their unique collections.
