Human is the only specie that understands the concept of risk. However, they feel anxiety about mere possibilities while not paying attention to probabilities. People are much more scared by the madcow pathogen that might be (but almost certainly is not) in their hamburger and concern far less about cholesterol contributing to the heart disease that kills 700000 of them annually.
Part of theproblem we have with measuring risk, scientists say, is that “we are moving through the modern world with a prehistoric brain.” The jumpiest and primitive part of the brain is the amygdale that reactsthe most dramatically, pumping hormones into our blood.
There are many factors that influence our risk perception. Perhaps the most important is dread.
The more pain at suffering something cause, themore we tend to fear it, the quicker and clear the death, the less it bother us.
Unfamiliar treats trouble people more that familiar ones. But also unavoidable accidents worry people more than thingthey can control.
More over, people often misjudge risk because of “optimism” the belief of invincibility that risk that apply other people don’t apply as. We irrationally react to risky behaviourthat also confers some benefits. Especially, when the gratification is immediate and consequences come later. The scientist’s finding supports the idea that people react to the same risks differentlybecause of the mix of genetic and environmental variables.
Sensible calculation of real world risk is the problem, which solution will help us to have a rational response to risk. One way to startwould be to look at the number in one study, Slovic found that were more likely to approve of airline.
Safety- equipments purchase it they were told that it could “potentially save 98% of 150 people”than if they were told “potentially save 150 people”. If you can get people to compare “he says,” then you are in situation were you can get them to take reasonable choices.”
We can do better, and...
