This Manual is a supplement to the textbook on the theory oftranslation for the students of foreign languages institutes and departments. It deals with the problems of translation from English into Russian and is designed to assist the students in applying their theoretical knowledge to practical work.
The Manual consists of three parts. Part I contains the materials for a workshop on the general theory of translation. Its aim is to help the students to discussthe basic postulates of the translation theory and to use them in text analysis and identification of the translation problems. The practical assignments are preceded by brief accounts of the respective theoretical assumptions, which provides the students with the required terminology. These theoretical introductions are based on the respective chapters in the abovementioned textbook and make use ofa number of examples cited there. For a more detailed treatment of each subject the students are referred to the textbook.
Part II of the Manual is a collection of exercises on specific problems of translation from English into Russian. The four chapters of this part deal with various lexical, collocational, grammatical and stylistic problems of translation. Though the translator has to do withmore or less complete speech entities (texts) rather than with isolated language units or forms, the presence of a unit or form of a particular type in the source text may create specific difficulties which the translator should be able to identify and to overcome. This can be best achieved by studying the problems involved and doing appropriate exercises.
The texts provided in Part III are meantfor the student's self-training. They are preceded by assignments which draw the student's attention to the major translation problems in each text, and with key translations for self-correction. It should be borne in mind, however, that the suggested translations are indicative and do not preclude the possibility of a different choice.
Though based on original materials, all texts and exercisesin the Manual have been restructured and considerably modified for training purposes. Therefore their sources are not indicated and the authors bear full responsibility for their correctness and suitability.
